Each of us grows and develops functional skills at our own pace.
We usually learn to develop the skills to communicate, relate to others, build self-esteem, cope with stressors and so on. As we continue to mature, we develop more skills—but some children acquire these skills at a slower or inconsistent rate, which impedes development. Such are the children on the spectrum, including autism, Asperger's disorder, hyperlexia, sensory integration dysfunction and other pervasive developmental delays.
