Dr. Joshua Kefer graduated from Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and American Studies. While at Brandeis, he worked in an on-campus kindergarten program. Upon graduation, Dr. Kefer worked for several years in a residential program in Central Massachusetts as a full-time senior counselor and case manager for children aged 7 through 13 with severe aggressive behaviors and significant psychiatric disorders. This experience provided Dr. Kefer with a strong foundation in psychiatric medication, crisis intervention and behavior modification. Because these children were displaced from their homes, Dr. Kefer also served as a positive parental figure and mentor.
Shortly thereafter, Dr. Kefer enrolled in the School-Community Doctor of Psychology program at Hofstra University. He received a Masters of Science (with distinction) in 1998 and a doctorate (PsyD) in 2003. Dr. Kefer completed two predoctoral internships during this time. He first served as an intern to the Farmingdale School District (NY), conducting special education evaluations and clinical support to students and teachers. He later worked as a unit clinician, diagnostician, and group home consultant with adolescent boys (aged 12-18) who were remanded by the courts due to significant externalizing behaviors at the St. Mary’s Children and Family Services program in New York.
Dr. Kefer has had extensive experience working in the public schools. Immediately after receiving his doctorate, Dr. Kefer worked as a school psychologist in Palo Alto, California. He is currently employed by the Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia (2002 to present) as a school psychologist in a program for emotionally disabled special-education students in a self-contained classroom. This experience has honed Dr. Kefer’s skills in psychological evaluation. It also makes Dr. Kefer an invaluable resource for families who are concerned about their child’s school performance or who are navigating the special education process.
Dr. Kefer incorporates a comprehensive treatment approach to his practice of clinical psychology, with particular experience working with youth and their families. In this capacity, he provides individual, group and family therapy. Dr. Kefer has developed expertise working with children with varied behavioral problems and psychological histories. In particular, he has worked with children who are highly distractable and impulsive (ADHD), moody and irritable (Childhood Depression, Bipolar Disorder), anxious, and prone to acting out or rule breaking (ODD, CD). Dr. Kefer has also worked extensively with children with a history of trauma (PTSD) and anger management problems.
Dr. Kefer is married with one young, adorable (albeit naughty) son. His interests include pop culture, movies, music, camping, visiting National Parks, hiking and travel.
