Dr. Kelly Theis is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing a wide variety of difficulties. Her particular areas of interest and expertise include parenting, trauma, depression, ADHD, and attachment. She also is skilled in assisting individuals who are experiencing a transition, such as divorce, loss, or new parenthood. Dr. Theis understands the critical role that parents play in promoting a child’s well-being. Thus, in addition to fostering successful therapeutic relationships with children and adolescents, her treatment approach helps entire families become happier and healthier.
At MindWorks, Dr. Theis provides individual, play, couples, and family therapy to clients of all ages, and conducts psychological evaluations. She uses multiple treatment modalities, including cognitive-behavioral approaches, and works closely with clients to help them reach specific treatment goals. In addition to direct clinical work, Dr. Theis has extensive experience providing clinical supervision to trainees and has managed several successful clinical programs at the Center for Multicultural Human Services, a non-profit agency. She also enjoys training other mental health professionals on a variety of clinical topics.
Dr. Theis’s dedication to helping children and families has been long-standing. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from James Madison University and she received a master’s degree in psychology from Wake Forest University. At the University of Miami, she completed her doctoral degree in clinical psychology with a specialization in children and families. Throughout her training, Dr. Theis has conducted research on family relationships, including parenting stress, children’s responses to marital conflict, and parenting behavior. She has published a chapter on the effects of post-divorce conflict on children and has presented on research and clinical issues at numerous conferences across the country.
Dr. Theis completed her predoctoral internship at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. At Children’s, Dr. Theis provided both inpatient and outpatient treatment to children and adolescents, led parent education groups and social skills groups for children, and conducted psychological evaluations assessing multiple factors including learning difficulties, attention, and emotional functioning. Her postdoctoral fellowship was at the University of Virginia Health System, and included training in the Child and Family Psychiatry Clinic, the Family Stress Clinic, and the Mary D. Ainsworth Child-Parent Attachment Clinic.
Dr. Theis is married and has a son. She enjoys hiking, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
